Biotic Effects of Sea Level Change: the Pleistocene Test
نویسندگان
چکیده
Species diversity change, and therefore compositional changes in a biota, may be associated with changes at any of three ecological evels, involving the number of provinces within the biosphere, of communities within provinces, and of species represented within communities. Pleistocene sea level changes did not much affect the marine biosphere at any ecological level. An analysis of an extensive data set of Californian Pleistocene and Recent mollusks indicates a continuity of community and species composition during highstands of the last million years. Extensive latitudinal shifts in species' geographic ranges, associated with climatic change and not with sea level itself, created the most significant biotic changes. Extinctions were minimal, well below predicted species=area effects. Evidently, only "perched" faunas are particularly vulnerable to sea level change. Although sea level falls are commonly associated with a faunal hiatus, changes associated therewith can be referred to sea level change itself only in limited situations, and other paleobiologic explanations should be sought in most cases.

Phylogeographic patterns of Hawaiian Megalagrion damselflies (Odonata: Coenagrionidae) correlate with Pleistocene island boundaries.
The Pleistocene geological history of the Hawaiian Islands is becoming well understood. Numerous predictions about the influence of this history on the genetic diversity of Hawaiian organisms have been made, including the idea that changing sea levels would lead to the genetic differentiation of populations isolated on individual volcanoes during high sea stands. Here, we analyse DNA sequence d...
متن کاملMid Pleistocene foraminiferal mass extinction coupled with phytoplankton evolution
Understanding the interaction between climate and biotic evolution is crucial for deciphering the sensitivity of life. An enigmatic mass extinction occurred in the deep oceans during the Mid Pleistocene, with a loss of over 100 species (20%) of sea floor calcareous foraminifera. An evolutionarily conservative group, benthic foraminifera often comprise >50% of eukaryote biomass on the deep-ocean...
متن کاملMolecular signatures of Pleistocene sea-level changes that affected connectivity among freshwater shrimp in Indo-Australian waters.
A major paradigm in evolutionary biology asserts that global climate change during the Pleistocene often led to rapid and extensive diversification in numerous taxa. Recent phylogenetic data suggest that past climatic oscillations may have promoted long-distance marine dispersal in some freshwater crustacea from the Indo-Australian Archipelago (IAA). Whether this pattern is common, and whether ...
متن کاملMorphometric Analysis to Assess Sea Level History and Uplift Rate in the Pleistocene Marine Terraces of Chabahar
Abstract Marine terraces have long been used as baseline geodetic markers of relative past sea levels, reflecting the interaction between vertical crustal movements and sea level oscillations. The terraces age and elevation of shoreline angles can be used to determine uplift rate. Disparate uplift rates in pervious investigation in the study area are related to manual measurements based on ...
متن کاملAncient divergence time estimates in Eutropis rugifera support the existence of Pleistocene barriers on the exposed Sunda Shelf
Episodic sea level changes that repeatedly exposed and inundated the Sunda Shelf characterize the Pleistocene. Available evidence points to a more xeric central Sunda Shelf during periods of low sea levels, and despite the broad land connections that persisted during this time, some organisms are assumed to have faced barriers to dispersal between land-masses on the Sunda Shelf. Eutropis rugife...
